In cases involving public figures or matters of public concern, the burden of proving falsity is on the plaintiff. Superior Court<\/span> (2019) 34 Cal.App.5th 24, 37 [247 Cal.Rptr.3d 5].) <br class=\"avia-permanent-lb\" \/><br class=\"avia-permanent-lb\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"SS_Note\">\n<h2 class=\"SS_HideShowSection SS_Expandable\">Sources and Authority<\/h2>\n<div id=\"TRNotes_n_3\">\n<p><span class=\"SS_ListLabel\">\u2022<\/span><span class=\"SS_ListItemContent\">\u201cTruth, of course, is an absolute defense to any libel action.\u201d (<span class=\"SS_it\" data-housestyle=\"EMPHASIS_it\">Campanelli v. Regents of Univ. of Cal.<\/span>\u00a0(1996) 44 Cal.App.4th 572, 581\u2013582 [51 Cal.Rptr.2d 891].)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"SS_ListLabel\">\u2022<\/span><span class=\"SS_ListItemContent\">\u201cCalifornia law permits the defense of substantial truth and would absolve a defendant even if she cannot \u2018justify every word of the alleged defamatory matter; it is sufficient if the substance of the charge be proved true, irrespective of slight inaccuracy in the details.\u2019\u2009\u2018Minor inaccuracies do not amount to falsity so long as \u2018the substance, the gist, the sting, of the libelous charge be justified.\u2019\u2009\u201d (<span class=\"SS_it\" data-housestyle=\"EMPHASIS_it\">GetFugu, Inc. v. Patton Boggs LLP<\/span>\u00a0(2013) 220 Cal.App.4th 141, 154 [162 Cal.Rptr.3d 831], internal citation omitted.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"SS_ListLabel\">\u2022<\/span><span class=\"SS_ListItemContent\">\u201cPut another way, the statement is not considered false unless it \u2018would have a different effect on the mind of the reader from that which the pleaded truth would have produced.\u2019\u2009\u201d (<span class=\"SS_it\" data-housestyle=\"EMPHASIS_it\">Jackson v. Mayweather<\/span>\u00a0(2017) 10 Cal.App.5th 1240, 1262\u20131263 [217 Cal.Rptr.3d 234].)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"SS_ListLabel\">\u2022<\/span><span class=\"SS_ListItemContent\">\u201cIn defamation actions generally, factual truth is a defense which it is the defendant\u2019s burden to prove. [\u00b6] In a defamation action against a newspaper by a private person suing over statements of public concern, however, the\u00a0First Amendment\u00a0places the burden of proving falsity on the\u00a0<span class=\"SS_it\" data-housestyle=\"EMPHASIS_it\">plaintiff<\/span>. As a matter of constitutional law, therefore, media statements on matters of public interest, including statements of opinion which reasonably imply a knowledge of facts, \u2018must be provable as false before there can be liability under state defamation law.\u2019\u2009\u201d (<span class=\"SS_it\" data-housestyle=\"EMPHASIS_it\">Eisenberg v.
